Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano began erupting in 1968. The volcano provides great shows of lava and gas for anyone lucky enough to see it. Due to the location the volcano can be clouded in for days (the photo above is the most we saw). The west part of Arenal Lake is known for its windsurfing with constant wind from December to April.

The Arenal area is rather large. If you are there for windsurfing then choose a place on the west end of the lake. Cheaper places can be found in Fortuna.

High End:

  • Tabacon Resort - This is a hot spot for vistors. The resort features a huge series of hot springs, spa, amazing views of lava flow from the volcano and fantastic food. The rooms are very swank. Staff are very nice.

Middle:

  • Arenal Observvatory Lodge - Located on a 870 acre macadamia nut farm the lodge provides guests with the closest accomodation to the Arenal Volcano. Most rooms provide views of the volcano. The lodge is in the national park so the birding and wildlife are excellent. There are many trails to explore. The food at the lodge is very good.
