The Arenal Volcano began erupting in 1968. The volcano provides great shows of lava and gas for anyone lucky enough to see it. Due to the location the volcano can be clouded in for days (the photo above is the most we saw). The west part of Arenal Lake is known for its windsurfing with constant wind from December to April. |

Air: There are flights to La Fortuna. Normal Bus: There are several buses a day leaving from San Jose to La Fortuna. Tourist Bus: Both major tour bus lines have a daily departure for Arenal from several other destinations. Only Interbus will take you to the Observatory Lodge. Taxi/Car: (~3 hours) The road from San Jose is good. Lots of twists. |

The Arenal area is rather large. If you are there for windsurfing then choose a place on the west end of the lake. Cheaper places can be found in Fortuna. High End:

Tabacon
Hot Springs - A must if you are in the area. Entrance is free to guests
of the resort. The place is more like a water park. There are several
pools
providing
different
temperatures. The river is also heated. |

Loads of hiking in the area. Windsurfing - Arenal Lake is ranked one of the top three places in the world for windsurfing. Tilawa provides rentals and lessons. |

Safety |
Very
safe area other then the safety concerns of the volcano. Do not
attempt to climb up the Arenal Volcano. The gas and ash can reach
speeds of 120 km/h as it rolls down the side of the volcano. Stick
to marked trails. |
