This Hydoro Electric Barrel Generator is a pretty cool idea. There has been a lot of talk about run of river hydro but this takes the idea in a new direction. It is worth checking out the section about the development, amazing how one invention can lead to another one.

IESO Wind Tracker
The IESO, Independent Electricity System Operator, is mandated with managing the demand and supply of Ontario’s open electricity market. Their site has an impressive amount of historical and real time data. For example, if you want to see what the current makeup of electricity feeding into the grid is right now, they can show you with a nice little pie chart on their homepage. Another is the IESO Wind Power Map which shows the current wind energy being supplied onto the grid.

Quicken Issue With TSX Index
Just noticed that my version of Quicken had stopped downloading quotes for both the Toronto Stock Exchange and Toronto Venture Exchange, several months ago. I actually thought my investments were starting to look pretty good in comparison. I went digging around the Intuit support site but didn’t get much help there. I did manage to find a solution that seems to have the updates working again.
For the TSX follow these steps:
- Open the portfolio screen and scroll to your list of index.
- Click on the S&P/TSX Composite Index.
- This will open the security detail view window for OSPTX. Now click on Edit Security Details button.
- In the new window, click on the drop down arrow for Exchange and select U.S. Stock. (Don’t know why, but hey it seems to work.)
- Click on OK to accept the change. In the new window leave the selection to merge quotes from OSPTX into OSPTX.
- Click Ok to accept the changes.
Do the same thing for the Toronto Venture Exchange but use the symbol OSPVX.
If anyone has another solution or an explanation of what happened to break this then please leave a comment.
Update: 01/29/2010
Quicken.ca now has the above solution posted for this problem now. They indicate that this was due to switching providers for security updates. Makes me think this was a choice made by headquarters in the U.S. without consideration for their Canadian users.
Firefox Facts
I just stumbled upon the site Firefox Facts and on the very first post discovered something pretty cool that I didn’t know existed. You can turn on Firefox’s spell checker on any website to catch spelling errors. Great tool if you suck at spelling like me or if you are asked to proof read web pages. Here is how to do it from the Firefox Facts post Use Firefox’s Spellchecker Anywhere!:
The first step to take would be to bookmark this link (or drag and drop it onto your bookmarks toolbar).
When the bookmarklet is clicked, Firefox will turn on the built in spellchecker and highlight any misspelled words that are on the page you are currently browsing.
Give it a try, just pick any post on this site as I am sure there are errors all over it.
It is worth check out the Firefox Facts site, it has lots of other great tips and tricks.
